How to count word frequency online
Paste your text

Toggle Ignore common words to hide filler like the, and, and of, or raise the minimum word length to focus on longer words.

Why use this tool
Built-in common word filter
One toggle hides about fifty of the most frequent English words such as the, of, and to, so the list surfaces the words that carry your meaning.
Minimum length filter
Limit the ranking to words of 2, 3, or 4 letters and up to skip short fragments and focus on substantive vocabulary.
Counts, percentages, and bars
Every word shows its rank, raw count, share of the total, and a proportional bar, so heavy repetition is visible at a glance.
CSV export of the full list
The table shows the top 200 words to stay fast, but Copy as CSV exports every word with its count and percentage.
Nothing leaves your browser
Counting happens on your device. The text is never uploaded, stored, or logged, and the tool is free with no signup.
About this tool
This word frequency counter tallies how often each distinct word appears in your text and ranks the results from most to least frequent. Matching is case-insensitive, so The and the count as one word, and apostrophes are kept inside words, so don't stays a single word instead of splitting into two fragments. Each row shows the word's rank, its raw count, its percentage of all counted words, and a proportional bar, and the whole list recalculates a moment after you stop typing.
Frequency is most useful for spotting habits that totals hide. Writers run essays and marketing copy through it to catch overused words, editors compare a draft against a style guide's pet peeves, and SEO writers use it as a basic keyword density check to confirm a target phrase appears often enough without tipping into stuffing. Language learners and researchers use the same ranking for simple vocabulary analysis. The Ignore common words toggle changes the picture completely: with it off, the top of almost any English text is the, and, and of; with it on, those structural words disappear and your actual subject matter rises to the top.
Everything runs in your browser. The text is never uploaded, so the tool is safe for unpublished drafts and confidential documents, and it is free with no signup. The on-screen table caps at the top 200 words to stay quick, and Copy as CSV exports the complete ranked list for a spreadsheet. If you only need totals rather than a breakdown, the word counter reports words, characters, and reading time, and if you want to reformat the standout words for a headline, the case converter handles title case and more.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the word frequency counter work?
- Paste or type text and the tool counts every word a moment after you stop typing. Words are compared case-insensitively and ranked by how many times they occur, with a percentage of the total next to each count.
- What counts as a word?
- Any run of letters or numbers. Punctuation and spaces separate words, but apostrophes inside a word are kept, so don't and it's each count as one word. Uppercase and lowercase forms are combined into a single entry.
- Which words does Ignore common words remove?
- A built-in list of about fifty of the most frequent English function words, such as the, a, and, of, to, in, and is. Hiding them makes the meaningful vocabulary of a text much easier to see. The list is fixed and designed for English text.
- Is my text uploaded anywhere?
- No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device and is not stored or logged, so it is safe for confidential drafts.
- Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?
- No hard limit. Very large pastes take a moment to process, and the on-screen table shows the top 200 words. Copy as CSV always exports the full ranked list.
