Kilometers to Miles
Turn a kilometer figure into miles as you type, with race distances and speed limits.
| Distance | Kilometers | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| Track lap | 0.4 | 0.25 |
| One kilometer | 1 | 0.62 |
| Parkrun (5K) | 5 | 3.11 |
| 10K race | 10 | 6.21 |
| Half marathon | 21.0975 | 13.11 |
| Marathon | 42.195 | 26.22 |
| 50K ultra | 50 | 31.07 |
| Century ride (160K) | 160.9344 | 100 |
| Posted limit | km/h | mph |
|---|---|---|
| 30 km/h sign | 30 | 18.6 |
| 50 km/h sign | 50 | 31.1 |
| 60 km/h sign | 60 | 37.3 |
| 80 km/h sign | 80 | 49.7 |
| 90 km/h sign | 90 | 55.9 |
| 100 km/h sign | 100 | 62.1 |
| 110 km/h sign | 110 | 68.4 |
| 120 km/h sign | 120 | 74.6 |
| 130 km/h sign | 130 | 80.8 |
A speed in km/h converts with the same factor as a distance in kilometers.
How to convert kilometers to miles
Enter the kilometers
Type the figure from your race entry, map, or road sign into the kilometers field.
Read the miles
The mile equivalent appears straight away, with a feet figure underneath for short distances.
Choose the rounding
Pick whole miles for a rough sense of the distance, or up to six decimal places when you need the exact figure.
Copy or reverse it
Copy the mile value, or type into the miles field to convert back the other way.
Why use this tool
Race distances built in
A 5K, a 10K, a half marathon at 21.0975 km, and a marathon at 42.195 km are listed with their mile equivalents.
Speed limit table
Posted limits from 30 to 130 km/h are converted to mph, which covers most signs in Europe, Canada, and Australia.
Exact factor
A mile is defined as exactly 1609.344 meters, so results here match official race and road distances rather than approximating.
Both directions in one field
Type kilometers to get miles, or type miles to get kilometers. Whichever field you edited last drives the other.
Feet for short hops
Distances under a mile also show a feet figure, which is more useful than a long string of decimal miles.
Nothing leaves your device
The math runs in your browser as you type. No distance you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored.
About this tool
Most of the world measures distance in kilometers, so a race entry, a trail sign, a rental car dashboard, or a European road atlas hands you a number you then have to translate. This converter does that translation the moment you type. The factor is fixed: one mile is defined as exactly 1609.344 meters, so dividing kilometers by 1.609344 gives miles with no approximation involved.
Runners are the heaviest users of this conversion, which is why the distance table leads with race lengths rather than round numbers. A 5K is 3.11 miles, a 10K is 6.21 miles, a half marathon is 13.11 miles, and a marathon is 26.22 miles. Those odd fractions are the reason the metric figures look tidy on a race bib and the mile figures never do.
The second table handles driving. A 50 km/h town sign is about 31 mph, a 100 km/h highway is about 62 mph, and a 130 km/h motorway is about 81 mph. Speed uses the same factor as distance, so one table serves both. Rounding is yours to set, from whole miles to six decimal places. To convert the other way, use miles to kilometers. For pace rather than distance, the running pace calculator works in both units, and the speed converter covers knots and meters per second too.
Frequently asked questions
- How many miles is a kilometer?
- One kilometer is about 0.621371 miles. To convert, divide the kilometer figure by 1.609344, or multiply it by 0.621371 for the same answer.
- How many miles is a 5K?
- 5 kilometers is 3.106856 miles, usually quoted as 3.1 miles. A 10K is 6.21 miles, a half marathon is 13.11 miles, and a marathon is 26.22 miles.
- How do I convert km/h to mph?
- Use the same factor as distance. 100 km/h is about 62.1 mph and 130 km/h is about 80.8 mph. The speed limit table lists the common posted values.
- Can I convert miles back to kilometers here?
- Yes. Type into the miles field and the kilometers field updates instead. The field you edited last is the one driving the result.
- What happens with an empty or negative value?
- An empty field shows a hint rather than a result, and a negative number is treated as zero because a distance cannot be less than nothing.
