How to convert between metric prefixes
Enter a value
Type the number you want to convert into the value field.
Pick the source prefix
Choose the prefix your value uses, such as kilo, mega, or milli, or the base unit.
Read every conversion
See the same quantity restated in every other SI prefix, updating live as you type.
Copy what you need
Copy a single row or copy all conversions at once with the button below.
Why use this tool
Every prefix at once
One value is restated from yotta down to yocto, including kilo, mega, giga, tera, milli, micro, nano, and pico.
Unit-agnostic
Works with any base quantity, so 2500 base units becomes 2.5 kilo, 2,500,000 milli, and so on regardless of what you are measuring.
Adjustable precision
Slide the decimal places from 0 to 8, and very large or small results switch to scientific notation to stay readable.
Copy one or all
Copy any single conversion or grab the whole list in one tap for pasting into notes or homework.
Runs entirely on your device
Values are converted locally as you type. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
About this tool
The metric prefix converter restates a single number across every SI prefix at the same time. Enter a value, pick the prefix it currently uses, and the same underlying quantity appears as yotta, zetta, exa, peta, tera, giga, mega, kilo, hecto, deca, the base unit, deci, centi, milli, micro, nano, pico, femto, atto, zepto, and yocto.
Each prefix is a fixed power of ten relative to the base unit. Kilo is 1000, mega is a million, giga is a billion, and going the other way milli is a thousandth, micro is a millionth, and nano is a billionth. Your input is first converted to base units, then rescaled into every prefix, so the whole set stays consistent no matter where you start. This is the machinery behind statements like 2500 metres being 2.5 kilometres or 0.005 seconds being 5 milliseconds.
Because the prefixes are unit-agnostic, the tool works for any measurement written in the metric system, whether metres, grams, watts, or bytes counted in powers of ten. Negative numbers are allowed, since a prefix change is a pure rescaling. To keep results readable, very large and very small values are shown in scientific notation while everyday numbers use grouped digits, and you control the number of decimal places.
Non-numeric input shows a short hint instead of a broken result. For related conversions, try the number base converter, the data storage converter, or the everyday unit converter.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between kilo and mega?
- Kilo means one thousand and mega means one million, a factor of a thousand apart. So 5000 kilo equals 5 mega, and this tool shows every prefix at once.
- How many milli are in one base unit?
- One base unit equals 1000 milli, since milli means one thousandth. Likewise one base unit is a million micro and a billion nano.
- Does this work with any unit?
- Yes. The prefixes are pure powers of ten, so the tool applies to metres, grams, watts, seconds, or any metric quantity. Just enter the number and pick the prefix.
- Can I enter negative numbers?
- Yes. Changing a prefix is only a rescaling, so negative values are allowed and convert normally.
- Is my input sent anywhere?
- No. Every conversion happens on your device as you type. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored.
