Tip Calculator

Work out the tip, the total, and each person's share from any bill, with preset or custom percentages, optional tax, and a round-up.

Plain numbers, any currency. Calculated in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Tip

Pick a preset or type any percentage, decimals included. Set 0 to just split the bill.

Tax (optional)

Optional. The tip is figured on the amount above, before tax, then tax is added to the total. Leave blank to skip it.

person

Splits evenly. Leave it at 1 when nobody is sharing.

Result

Enter the bill amount to see the tip and totals.

How to calculate a tip and split the bill

  1. Enter the bill amount

Type the amount from the receipt. The tip and total appear as soon as the number is valid; there is no button to press.

  2. Set the tip, split, and any tax

Pick a preset tip or type your own, set how many people are sharing, and add a tax rate or amount if you want the total to include it.

  3. Read or copy the result

The tip, total, and per-person share update live. Turn on round up to lift each share to a whole amount, then copy the summary.

Why use this tool

Preset and custom percentages

One tap sets 10, 15, 18, 20, or 25 percent, and a custom field takes any other rate, including decimals like 12.5.

Even per-person split

Set the number of people and the tool shows the tip and total each person owes, alongside the figures for the whole table.

Optional tax, tip on the subtotal

Add a tax rate or a flat tax amount and the tip is still figured on the pre-tax subtotal, with the tax added to the final total.

Round up without hiding the cost

The round up option lifts each share to the next whole amount and states exactly how much extra that collects overall.

About this tool

This tip calculator works out the tip and the total from whatever bill amount you type, updating live with every keystroke. Pick one of the preset percentages or enter your own, then set how many people are sharing and it shows what each person owes, both their part of the tip and their full share. The numbers are plain, with two decimals and no currency symbol, so the result reads the same whether the bill is in dollars, euros, or anything else.

Tipping norms differ by country and setting, which is why the percentage is never locked to a preset. Type 7.5 where a service charge is already included, 20 where that is the local standard, or 0 to simply split a bill evenly. If your receipt lists sales tax, add it as a rate or a flat amount and the tip stays figured on the pre-tax subtotal, the common convention, while the total you see and split includes that tax. For group dinners, the per-person figures remove the awkward mental arithmetic at the end of the meal, and the round up option lifts each share to the next whole amount for easy cash payments while stating exactly how much extra that adds, so nobody quietly overpays.

Everything is calculated on the page, so the amounts you type are never uploaded or stored. For percentage maths beyond tipping, the percentage calculator covers increases, decreases, and shares of a whole; for money off rather than money on top, use the discount calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Add your sales tax as a rate or a flat amount and the calculator figures the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, then adds the tax to the total, which matches the common convention. Leave the tax field blank and it simply applies the tip to whatever amount you enter.
How does the split handle rounding?
Each person's share is the total divided evenly, shown to two decimals. With round up on, every share is lifted to the next whole amount instead, and the tool states how much extra that collects compared with the exact total.
Can I use a tip percentage that is not a preset?
Yes. Type any rate into the custom field, including decimals such as 12.5 or 7.25. Setting it to 0 turns the tool into a plain bill splitter.
Which currency does the calculator use?
None in particular. It works with plain numbers to two decimal places, so the result reads the same in any currency.
Is the bill amount uploaded anywhere?
No. All calculations happen in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, stored, or logged.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, the calculator needs no connection, so it keeps working in a restaurant with poor signal.
