Chat Screenshot Anonymizer

To anonymize a chat screenshot, replace each name with a neutral label and cover avatars, phone numbers, and emails. One label per person, kept the same across every screenshot, leaves the conversation readable: "Person A asked Person B" still makes sense where a row of black bars would not.

Files stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to hide names in a chat screenshot

  1. Add your screenshots

Drop one or more chat screenshots, click to browse, or paste one with Cmd+V or Ctrl+V. Several parts of the same chat can go in together.

  2. Check who is who

Names are replaced with Person A, Person B, and so on, and the list under the image shows which label stands for which name.

  3. Fix anything missed

Click a box to uncover it, drag on the image to cover something else, or untick a person to show their name everywhere.

  4. Download

Save one screenshot as an image in its original format, or several at once as a ZIP.

Why use this tool

Same label in every screenshot

A long chat captured in three parts keeps one set of labels: if Jane is Person A in the first screenshot, she is Person A in all three.

Names in every shape

Sender names, names inside messages, first names on their own, @mentions, and names that wrap onto a second line all map to the same person.

Labels, not black bars

Names are painted over with a label in the bubble colour at the size of the text around it, so the conversation still reads naturally.

Avatars and contact details covered

Profile photos, phone numbers, email addresses, profile links, and keys are covered with black boxes, blur, or pixels. A phone number used as a contact name becomes a label instead.

Nothing leaves your browser

The text, the names, and the faces are all found on your device. The screenshots are never uploaded, and the saved copies carry no hidden metadata.

About this tool

A chat screenshot is often the clearest way to show what someone said, and also the easiest way to expose people who never agreed to be shared. Black bars over every name make a conversation hard to follow. This tool replaces each person with a label instead: the first person in the chat becomes Person A, the next Person B, and every mention of them, in sender names, message text, and @mentions, carries the same label.

It reads the text in the screenshot, finds names with a name finder that runs in your browser, and works out who is who across the whole batch: "Sarah Mitchell", "Sarah" and "sarah," are one person, and a first name alone joins the full name when only one person in the chats has it. Phone numbers, email addresses, profile links, and keys are covered, and so are profile photos and faces. The name finder is about 110 MB and downloads once, the first time.

Detection can miss things, especially names written in unusual ways or text that is very small or stylised, so check the result before you share it. For screenshots of settings pages or dashboards, the screenshot redactor covers contact details without labelling people. For photos of people, use face blur. To clear location and device details from any file without changing it, try the metadata stripper.

Frequently asked questions

How does it find the names?
It reads the text in the screenshot with its position, then a name finder that runs in your browser marks which words are names of people. Names that point to the same person (full name, first name, @mention) share one label across all the screenshots you add.
Are my screenshots uploaded anywhere?
No. Reading the text, finding names, and finding faces all happen in your browser. The first time you use it, the browser downloads the name finder (about 110 MB), a text reader, and a face finder, and keeps them saved for next time. Your screenshots never leave your device.
Which apps and files does it work with?
Any chat app with left-to-right text, including WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack, Discord, Messenger, Teams, and Telegram, in light or dark mode. It accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, and HEIC screenshots. Downloads keep the original format, except HEIC, which is saved as JPG.
Can it miss a name?
Yes. Unusual spellings, nicknames, names in other scripts, and very small or stylised text can be missed, and occasionally an ordinary word is taken for a name. Check every screenshot before you share it: drag on the image to cover anything missed, and click a box to uncover a word that should stay.
How do I keep one person visible?
Untick that person in the list under the image. Their name is shown again in every screenshot of the batch, while everyone else stays labelled. Tick it again to put the label back.
Are there any limits?
Text is read in English only. Very large images are scaled down to fit browser limits, and the tool says when that happens. Each screenshot takes a few seconds; the first one takes longer while the name finder downloads.
