WebP is now the default format on a large share of the web, so images saved from a browser often land on disk as .webp files that older editors, presentation software, and upload forms refuse to open. Converting to PNG solves that in one step and costs nothing in quality, because PNG stores every pixel exactly as the WebP decoded to.

The tool decodes the WebP, redraws it at full size, and encodes a lossless PNG. Transparency is carried over intact, so a cutout stays a cutout. The result line reports both file sizes: the PNG will usually be bigger, sometimes several times bigger on photographic content, since it is not compressing anything away. That is expected, and it is the price of a format that every piece of software understands.

Animated WebP files are detected and noted, because a PNG can only hold one frame and only the first one is exported.
