About this tool

The data transfer rate converter turns any network or storage speed into every other common unit at the same time. Enter a value, pick its unit, and bits per second and bytes per second at every scale from kilo to tera appear together. The most common confusion in this area is bits versus bytes: one byte is eight bits, so a 100 Mbit/s connection tops out around 12.5 MB/s of actual file throughput.

Every unit is defined relative to bits per second. Your input is first converted to bits per second, then divided into each target unit, so the whole set stays consistent. Internet plans and link speeds are usually quoted in bits per second, like Mbit/s and Gbit/s, while download managers and file copies usually report bytes per second, like MB/s. Seeing both at once makes it obvious why a fast plan number does not match the smaller transfer number.

The prefix basis toggle covers the second common source of disagreement. Decimal mode treats each step as 1000, so one megabit is 1,000,000 bits, the convention used for network speeds and most marketing figures. Binary mode treats each step as 1024, so one megabit becomes 1,048,576 bits, closer to how some tools count memory-style quantities. Byte units are always eight times their matching bit unit in both modes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbit/s counts megabits per second and is the usual unit for internet speed. MB/s counts megabytes per second, which is eight times larger. So 80 Mbit/s equals 10 MB/s, since one byte is eight bits.
Should I use decimal or binary prefixes?
Use decimal (1000) for network and internet speeds, which is how providers quote plans. Use binary (1024) when your tool counts in memory-style powers of two. The toggle switches every result at once.
Why does my 100 Mbit/s connection download at about 12 MB/s?
Because a byte is eight bits. Divide the bit rate by eight to get the byte rate, so 100 Mbit/s is about 12.5 MB/s before any overhead. This tool shows both side by side.
Can I convert negative data rate values?
No. A data rate here is treated as a magnitude, so negative inputs are rejected with a short hint. Enter zero or a positive number.
