VO2 Max Calculator
Estimate maximal oxygen uptake from a heart rate ratio, a Cooper 12-minute run, a 1.5 mile time, or a recent race, with a fitness category banded by age and sex.
Sex (for the fitness rating)
Estimation method
Calculated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
These are field estimates from formulas validated against groups, not a laboratory measurement, so an individual result can sit meaningfully above or below a true test. This is not medical advice.
How to estimate VO2 max
Enter your age and sex
These are used to band the result into a fitness category and to estimate a maximum heart rate where relevant.
Pick an estimation method
Choose heart rate, the Cooper 12-minute run, a 1.5 mile run time, or a recent race distance and time, based on the field test you have.
Enter the test result
Type the numbers for the method you picked: heart rates in beats per minute, distances, or a finish time.
Read and copy the estimate
See the estimated VO2 max in milliliters per kilogram per minute, which method produced it, and the fitness category, then copy the result.
Why use this tool
Four estimation methods
Switch between a resting and maximum heart rate ratio, the Cooper 12-minute run test, a 1.5 mile run time, or a recent race distance and time.
Fitness category by age and sex
The estimated figure is banded into very poor through superior using age and sex ranges, so a raw number becomes a category you can read at a glance.
Estimated max heart rate included
When a method does not ask for heart rate directly, an age-based estimated maximum heart rate is shown alongside the result as a bonus figure.
Shows which method produced the number
The result always states which formula was used, since the methods do not agree exactly with each other or with a laboratory test.
Accepts race times in minutes and seconds
Enter run and race times as minutes:seconds and distances in meters, kilometers, or miles, whichever matches how the test was recorded.
Runs entirely in your browser
Every calculation happens on your device. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
About this tool
VO2 max is the maximum rate at which the body can use oxygen during intense exercise, and it is one of the most common markers of aerobic fitness. A true measurement needs a laboratory treadmill or bike test with breath-by-breath gas analysis, but several field tests estimate it closely enough to track fitness changes over time. This calculator offers four of them and lets you pick whichever matches a test you have already done.
The heart rate method uses the ratio of your maximum to your resting heart rate, a non-exercise estimate from Uth, Sørensen, Overgaard, and Pedersen. The Cooper method uses the distance covered in a fixed 12-minute run, from the original 1968 Cooper test. The 1.5 mile method uses a finish time for that fixed distance. The race method uses the Daniels and Gilbert running formula, which estimates VO2 max from the pace and duration of any recent race, from a 5K to a marathon. Whichever method is used, the estimate is banded into a fitness category using age and sex ranges, and an age-based estimated maximum heart rate is shown as a bonus figure when the method did not already ask for one. To turn a heart rate into training zones once you have an estimate, the heart rate zone calculator picks up from here, and the running pace calculator works out pace for a target time.
Every one of these formulas is a population-level estimate validated against groups of people, not a personal measurement, so an individual result can sit meaningfully above or below a true laboratory test. Treat the number as a useful way to track your own trend over months of training rather than an exact figure. This is not medical advice, and everything runs in your browser: nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or logged.
Frequently asked questions
- What is VO2 max?
- VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use per minute during intense exercise, usually expressed in milliliters per kilogram of body weight per minute. It is a widely used marker of aerobic fitness and endurance capacity.
- Which estimation method should I use?
- Use whichever field test you have already done. The heart rate method needs only a resting and maximum heart rate and no running. The Cooper and 1.5 mile methods need a timed run at maximum effort. The race method works from a recent race result and does not require a dedicated test at all.
- How accurate is a VO2 max calculator compared to a lab test?
- Field estimates are useful for tracking fitness changes over time but can differ from a true laboratory measurement by several points in either direction, since they are formulas fitted to groups of people rather than a direct gas measurement of you specifically.
- How is the fitness category worked out?
- The estimated VO2 max is compared against age and sex ranges that split results into six bands, from very poor through superior. The exact cut points shift with age and differ between the sexes, which is why both are needed for a category.
- Why does the tool show an estimated maximum heart rate?
- For methods that do not ask for heart rate directly, an age-based estimate using the common 220 minus age formula is shown as a bonus figure, since it is often useful alongside a VO2 max estimate for planning training intensity.
- Is this medical advice?
- No. These are fitness estimates from published field-test formulas, not a medical or diagnostic measurement. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or logged.
