How to convert HEIC to PNG online

About this tool

HEIC is the format iPhones have saved photos in since iOS 11. It packs a photo into roughly half the space of a JPEG, which is why Apple chose it, and it is also why so many other programs cannot open it: Windows needs an extra codec, older editors ignore the files, and upload forms often reject them. PNG is the opposite kind of format. It is universally supported and stores every pixel exactly, with no compression artefacts at all.

This tool converts HEIC and HEIF photos to PNG entirely in your browser. Drop any number of files and press Convert. Photos are decoded one after another with a progress bar, each row reports the original size next to the PNG size, and a single file downloads directly while batches of two or more save together as one ZIP. There are no settings because PNG has no quality setting: the output is lossless by definition.

Expect large files. A 12-megapixel iPhone photo is around 2 MB as HEIC and typically 15 to 25 MB as PNG, because lossless compression cannot shrink photographic detail very far. That size is the point when the photo is headed into an editor or a print workflow, where every re-save of a JPG would degrade it a little more. If the files only need to be viewed or shared, HEIC to JPG produces something a tenth of the size.

Photos are processed on your device and never uploaded. Once converted, the PNGs work with every other tool here, such as the image compressor to bring the size back down, or PNG to WebP for a web-ready version.

How do I convert HEIC to PNG?

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses aggressive lossy compression and PNG uses none. A photo that was 2 MB as HEIC can easily be 20 MB as PNG. If size matters more than pixel-perfect output, HEIC to JPG is the better choice.
Does the PNG keep the full resolution?
Yes, up to the browser canvas limit of about 24 megapixels. Photos larger than that are scaled down to fit and the tool tells you when that happened. Standard iPhone photos are well under the limit.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your photos never leave your device and are never sent to a server.
Why does nothing happen when I drop a photo?
Conversion is a deliberate step here. After adding photos, press the Convert button under the list. That way you can add or remove photos before anything runs.
Why did one of my files fail to convert?
Usually the file is not actually a HEIC image, for example a JPG that was renamed with a .heic extension. A failed file shows an error on its own row and does not stop the rest of the batch.
