Mulch Calculator
Work out how much mulch a garden bed needs from its length and width or a total area and the depth you want, in cubic yards, cubic feet, and bags, with an optional cost.
Units
Bed size
Depth in in. A layer of 2 to 4 inches suits most garden beds.
Bag size and cost
Bags round up to whole bags. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
This is an estimate. Settling, uneven ground, and bed edges can change the real amount, so ordering a little extra for topping up is sensible.
How to calculate how much mulch you need
Choose your units
Pick feet with inches or meters with centimeters so every measurement and result uses the same system.
Measure the bed
Enter the bed length and width, or switch to enter a total area you have already measured.
Set the depth
Type how deep you want the mulch layer, with two to four inches suiting most garden beds.
Read the result
See the volume in cubic yards and cubic feet, the number of bags, and an optional cost from a price you enter.
Why use this tool
Length and width or total area
Enter the bed length and width and the area is worked out for you, or type a total area you measured for a curved or irregular bed.
Cubic yards and cubic feet
See the volume in cubic yards for bulk orders and cubic feet for bagged mulch, so you can compare the two ways of buying at a glance.
Bag count for your bag size
Pick your bag size and the tool rounds up to the whole number of bags you need to buy, so you never come up short on the job.
Optional cost estimate
Add a price per cubic yard, or per cubic meter, and see the estimated total cost alongside the volume so you can budget the delivery.
Feet or meters
Switch between feet with inches and meters with centimeters at any time. Your measurements convert automatically so the result stays the same.
Runs entirely in your browser
Every calculation happens on your device as you type. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged.
About this tool
This mulch calculator works out how much mulch you need to cover a garden bed and how much it will cost. Enter the bed length and width, or a total area you have already measured, together with the depth you want the mulch layer to be. It multiplies the area by the depth to get the volume, then reports that volume in cubic yards and cubic feet and converts it into the number of bags at the bag size you choose. Mulch is sold both loose by the cubic yard and bagged by the cubic foot, so seeing both figures side by side makes it easy to compare buying in bulk against buying bags.
A layer of two to four inches suits most beds: deeper smothers weeds and holds moisture, while a thin layer dries out and breaks down faster. Work in feet and inches or switch to meters and centimeters at any time, and your measurements convert automatically so the result stays the same. Add a price per cubic yard, or per cubic meter, to turn the volume into an estimated cost. The math is the same one used for other bulk materials, so the paint calculator sizes wall coverage the same way, and the unit converter helps when your measurements are in mixed units.
Treat the result as a close estimate. Settling, uneven ground, and bed edges all change the real amount, so ordering a little extra for topping up is sensible. Every calculation runs in your browser as you type, and nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or logged.
Frequently asked questions
- How much mulch do I need?
- Multiply the bed area by the depth to get the volume. For example, 200 square feet at 3 inches deep is 200 times 3 divided by 12, which is 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards. The tool does this for you and also converts the volume into bags.
- How deep should mulch be?
- Two to four inches is the usual range for garden beds. Around three inches suppresses weeds and holds moisture without smothering roots. Use a thinner layer for delicate ground covers and a deeper one for weed-prone areas or paths.
- How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
- A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Bagged mulch is usually sold in 2 cubic foot bags, so a cubic yard is about 13.5 bags, which rounds up to 14. At 1.5 cubic feet per bag it is 18 bags, and at 3 cubic feet per bag it is 9. Choose your bag size in the tool and it rounds up for you.
- Can I enter the area directly instead of length and width?
- Yes. Switch the input method to total area and type the number you measured in square feet or square meters. This is useful for curved beds, borders, and irregular shapes where length times width does not fit.
- Does it work in metric?
- Yes. Switch the units to meters and centimeters and the tool reports the volume in cubic meters and liters and counts bags by the liter. Your measurements convert automatically, so switching units does not change the amount of mulch.
- Is my data uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every measurement and result stays on your device. All calculations run in your browser as you type and nothing is sent to a server, stored, or logged.
