About this tool

The density converter turns any density value into every other common unit at the same time. Enter a value, pick its unit, and kg/m³, g/cm³, g/mL, kg/L, lb/ft³, lb/in³, and ounces per US gallon all appear together. Density is mass divided by volume, so it tells you how much a material weighs for a given space.

Every unit is defined relative to kilograms per cubic metre, the metric base unit for density. Your input is first converted to kg/m³, then divided into each target unit, so the whole set stays consistent. Grams per cubic centimetre, grams per millilitre, and kilograms per litre are numerically identical and all equal 1000 kg/m³, which is why pure water is about 1 g/cm³ and 1000 kg/m³ at the same time.

What is the density of water?
Pure water at about 4 degrees Celsius has a density near 1000 kg/m³, which equals 1 g/cm³, 1 g/mL, and 1 kg/L. That makes water a convenient reference point.
Why do g/cm³, g/mL, and kg/L show the same number?
Those three units are numerically equal. One cubic centimetre equals one millilitre, and the gram-per-cubic-centimetre and kilogram-per-litre scales line up, so a value like 1 reads the same in all three.
How do I convert lb/ft³ to kg/m³?
Multiply pounds per cubic foot by about 16.018 to get kilograms per cubic metre. This tool does it automatically and shows every other unit at the same time.
Can I convert negative density values?
