Density is mass divided by volume, so it tells you how much a material weighs for a given space.
Every unit is defined relative to kilograms per cubic metre, the metric base unit for density. Your input is first converted to kg/m³, then divided into each target unit, so the whole set stays consistent. Grams per cubic centimetre, grams per millilitre, and kilograms per litre are numerically identical and all equal 1000 kg/m³, which is why pure water is about 1 g/cm³ and 1000 kg/m³ at the same time.

- Why do g/cm³, g/mL, and kg/L show the same number?
- Those three units are numerically equal. One cubic centimetre equals one millilitre, and the gram-per-cubic-centimetre and kilogram-per-litre scales line up, so a value like 1 reads the same in all three.
- How do I convert lb/ft³ to kg/m³?
