ID Redactor
A safe ID copy for a landlord, employer, or hotel shows your name and hides what could be reused: the document number, the machine-readable lines at the bottom, your date of birth, photo, and signature. Covering them still proves who you are.
How to redact a passport or ID copy
Add your ID image
Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC photo or scan of the page, click to browse, or paste it. Add the back of a card as a second image if you need it.
Check what was covered
The document number, machine-readable lines, barcodes, date of birth, photo, and signature are covered automatically. The list under the image says what was found and what was not.
Fix anything it missed
Click a box to uncover it, drag over anything else to cover it, or switch a whole group off with the buttons under the list.
Download the safe copy
Pick black, blur, or pixelate, then download. The copy keeps the original format, HEIC becomes JPG, and no hidden photo details are saved.
Why use this tool
Reads the machine-readable lines
The two or three lines of letters, digits, and < signs at the bottom of passports and ID cards are read and their check digits verified, then the same number and birth date are found in the printed part of the page.
Your name stays visible
Most landlords, employers, and hotels need to see the name on the document. It is left readable by default; drag over it if you want it covered too.
Photo and signature
The portrait is covered whole, including the small faded copy many passports print beside it. A signature is covered when its label is printed next to it; if not, the list says so.
Says what it could not find
Anything expected but not found is listed with a note, so you know exactly what to drag over before sending. Nothing is reported as covered unless it is.
Front and back together
Add the back of a licence or ID card as a second image. Barcodes are found and covered in browsers that can read them, and both images download in one ZIP.
Nothing leaves your browser
The image is read on your device. Uploading an ID to have it redacted would hand over the very details you are trying to protect.
About this tool
Sending a full copy of your passport to a landlord or a hotel gives them everything needed to impersonate you: the document number, your date of birth, your photo, and your signature. Most of them only need to see that the document exists and that the name matches. This tool covers the reusable parts and leaves the name readable, so the copy still does its job.
On passports and most ID cards, the two or three machine-readable lines at the bottom repeat the document number and birth date with check digits. Those lines are read first and checked; the same values are then looked for in the printed fields, in any common date layout such as 12 MAR 1985, 12/03/1985, or 1985-03-12. Driving licences without those lines rely on printed labels such as Licence No. or Date of birth, which works less reliably, so the list under the image tells you what was not found.
Detection can miss things. Numbers punched sideways through the page, unusual layouts, and glare or a steep angle in a phone photo all make it harder, and only images are accepted: for a PDF, save the page as an image first. Check the preview before you send it. To clean the details stored inside a photo file, use the metadata stripper; for other pictures, face blur covers every face in a photo, and images to PDF puts the front and back on one page.
Frequently asked questions
- How does it find the details to cover?
- It reads the text on the image, including the machine-readable lines at the bottom, and checks their check digits. It then covers the document number and date of birth wherever they are printed, finds the face in the photo and grows the box to the whole portrait, and looks for a signature label. Barcodes are found where the browser supports it.
- Is my ID uploaded anywhere?
- No. The image is read and redacted in your browser and never sent to a server. The text reader and the face finder download once the first time, about 15 MB each, and stay saved in your browser after that.
- Which documents and files work?
- Passports, national ID cards, residence permits, and driving licences, as JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC photos or scans. You can add two images, the front and the back. PDFs are not accepted; save the page as an image first.
- Can it miss something?
- Yes. A glare spot, a steep angle, a blurry photo, or an unusual layout can hide a value from the reader, and numbers punched or printed sideways are not found. Anything expected but not found is listed with a note. Always check the preview and drag over anything still visible before you share the copy.
- Why is my name not covered?
- Landlords, employers, and hotels usually need to match the name on the document to you, so it is left visible. Drag over it to cover it as well.
- Can the covered parts be recovered?
- No. The covering is drawn into the pixels of the saved image, and blur and pixelate first shrink each area to a few colour cells, so the original detail is not in the file. The download carries no hidden photo details such as location or device.
