Audio Bleeper

An audio bleeper writes out what is said with the time of every word, finds the words that should not be heard, such as names, phone and card numbers, emails, places and swear words, and covers each one with a 1 kHz tone, silence or a muffle.

English speech. Video keeps its picture; only the sound is bleeped.

How to bleep words in audio

  1. Drop a recording

Drop an MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG file, or an MP4 or MOV video, up to 30 minutes of English speech. It is transcribed in your browser with a time for every word.

  2. Check the transcript

Names, numbers, emails, places and swear words are bleeped automatically and highlighted. Click any word to bleep or unbleep it, or drag across a phrase.

  3. Pick a sound and listen

Choose a bleep, silence or a muffle, then play the preview to hear exactly what will be covered.

  4. Download

Download the bleeped file in the same format as the original. For a video, the picture is copied untouched and only the sound is changed.

Why use this tool

Finds what to bleep on its own

People's names, places and street addresses, phone, card and account numbers (also when read out digit by digit, like 'oh seven seven double one'), email addresses spoken aloud, and common swear words. Each group is a toggle.

A transcript you can click

Every word is a button. Click to bleep or unbleep it, shift-click or drag to change a whole phrase, and the summary keeps count of what is covered.

Bleep, silence or muffle

A 1 kHz tone set to the loudness of the voice, plain silence, or a low rumble that keeps the rhythm of speech but none of the words. Each cover starts in the pause before a word, so first sounds do not slip out.

Same format out as in

MP3 stays MP3, M4A stays M4A, WAV stays WAV and OGG stays OGG. MP4 and MOV videos keep their picture exactly as it was; only the sound track is replaced.

Nothing leaves your browser

The recording is transcribed and bleeped on your device. It is never uploaded, and there is no account.

About this tool

The Audio Bleeper is for recordings that are fine to share except for a few words: a voicemail with a phone number in it, an interview that names a neighbour, a podcast clip with a swear word, a screen recording where someone reads out their email address. Drop the file and it is written out word by word, each word with the moment it was said. Names and places are found by a language model, numbers and emails by rules written for speech, so "four one one one" counts as a card number even when it was never typed.

Every covered word is highlighted in the transcript. Detection can miss things, especially unusual names, so read the transcript, click anything that was missed, and listen to the preview before sharing. Each bleep is stretched to the nearest pause before and after the word, with a tenth of a second to spare, so the first and last sounds of a word stay covered.

Recordings can be up to 30 minutes long (10 on a phone). On a recent laptop, listening takes about a third of the recording length. The first run downloads about 250 MB of speech and name models and the audio engine, which stay saved in your browser. To cut a long recording into parts first, use the audio trimmer. To drop the sound from a video altogether, mute the video instead, and for written documents use the Text Redactor.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know which words to bleep?
The recording is turned into a transcript with a start and end time for every word. Names and places are found by a model that reads the transcript; phone, card and account numbers, spoken email addresses and swear words are found by rules. Each found word is covered from just before it starts to just after it ends.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. Transcription, detection and bleeping all run in your browser. The models are downloaded once and kept in your browser; your audio never leaves your device.
Which files can I use?
MP3, M4A, WAV and OGG audio, and MP4 and MOV video, with English speech. The download keeps the same format. For video, the picture is copied as it is and only the sound track is replaced.
How long can the recording be?
Up to 30 minutes on a computer and 10 minutes on a phone. Longer recordings can be split with the audio trimmer and bleeped in parts.
Will it catch everything?
Not always. Unusual names, mumbled words and numbers said in odd ways can be missed or misheard. Check the transcript, click any word that should be covered, and play the preview before you share the file.
Can a bleep be undone in the downloaded file?
No. The covered stretch of sound is replaced in the file itself, not hidden behind a layer, so the original words are not in the download at all.
Why is the first run slow?
The first time, the page downloads about 250 MB of speech and name models plus the audio engine. After that they load from your browser in a few seconds.
