Why use this tool
Full paycheck breakdown
Every line is itemized: gross pay, pre-tax deductions, federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state tax, each shown per paycheck and per year.
Progressive federal brackets
Federal income tax uses the 2025 bracket table for single, married filing jointly, and head of household, applied to income after the standard deduction.
Correct FICA with the wage cap
Social Security is charged at 6.2% up to the annual wage base and stops above it, while Medicare stays at 1.45% on all wages.
Any pay frequency
Switch between weekly, every two weeks, twice a month, monthly, and annual, and every figure rescales to that schedule.
Effective and marginal rates
See the share of your pay that goes to tax, your take-home percentage, and the top federal bracket your income reaches.
Runs entirely in your browser
Pay figures are sensitive. Everything is calculated on your device and nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged.
About this tool
This paycheck calculator estimates your take-home pay, the amount that actually reaches your bank account after tax and deductions. Enter the gross figure on a single paycheck, choose your pay frequency, and the tool annualizes your income, subtracts pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction, then works out federal income tax from the progressive 2025 brackets for your filing status. On top of that it adds FICA, which is Social Security at 6.2% up to the annual wage cap plus Medicare at 1.45%, and a flat state tax rate that you supply.
It is built for the everyday questions a job offer or a raise raises: what will my check actually be, and how much of my pay disappears to tax. The breakdown itemizes federal tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state tax both per paycheck and per year, alongside your effective rate, your take-home percentage, and the top federal bracket you land in. To go the other way between yearly and hourly figures, pair it with the salary to hourly calculator or the hourly to salary calculator.
Treat the result as a careful estimate rather than an exact pay stub. It models federal income tax, FICA, one flat state rate, and pre-tax deductions, but it does not cover local or city taxes, tax credits, the additional Medicare surtax on high earners, or post-tax deductions, and state income tax is far more nuanced than a single percentage in most states. Your gross pay, deductions, and rate never leave the page: all of the math runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
- How is my take-home pay calculated?
- Your gross pay is annualized by your pay frequency. Pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction for your filing status are subtracted to get taxable income, federal tax is worked out from the progressive brackets, then Social Security, Medicare, and your flat state rate are added. Take-home pay is gross pay minus every deduction and tax.
- Which tax year and figures does it use?
- It uses the 2025 federal tax brackets and standard deductions for single, married filing jointly, and head of household, a Social Security rate of 6.2% up to the 2025 wage base, and a Medicare rate of 1.45% on all wages.
- How is state tax handled?
- State tax is applied as a single flat rate that you enter, on your pay after pre-tax deductions. Real state income tax often uses its own brackets, credits, and rules, so use a rate that reflects your situation and treat the state figure as an approximation.
- What does the estimate leave out?
- It does not include local or city taxes, tax credits, the additional Medicare surtax on high earners, or post-tax deductions such as Roth contributions. Actual withholding also depends on your W-4, so your real paycheck may differ.
- What are pre-tax deductions?
- These are amounts taken from your pay before income tax, such as a traditional retirement contribution or a health insurance premium. Enter the amount per paycheck and it lowers your taxable income. If deductions match or exceed your gross pay, the tool asks you to lower them.
- Is my pay information private?
- Yes. Your gross pay, deductions, and tax rate never leave your device. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged.
