How to add page numbers to a PDF online

  1. Add your PDF

Add the PDF you want to number by dropping it on the tool, browsing, or pasting from your clipboard. Numbers are stamped at the bottom centre straight away.

  2. Pick a position and format

Choose one of six positions and a format: a plain number, Page X, X of N, or your own text with tokens for the page number and total.

  3. Refine the numbering

Set the start number, skip the first page when it is a cover, and choose the size and colour that suit the document.

  4. Download the PDF

Click Download PDF to save the numbered document. Every settings change re-stamps the file on the spot.

Why use this tool

Six positions

Stamp numbers at the top or bottom of the page, aligned left, centre, or right. Bottom centre is the default.

Custom text and presets

Use a bare number, Page X, or X of N, or write your own text with {n} for the page number and {p} for the total, such as Page {n} of {p} or Draft {n}.

Skip the cover

Leave the first page unnumbered so a title or cover page stays clean. Numbering then begins on page two, which takes the start number.

Size and colour

Number pages small, medium, or large in black, grey, or white, so the label reads on light pages or over dark artwork.

Any start number

Begin at 7 when a document continues from another file, or wherever your numbering scheme demands. Pages count up from the value you set.

Runs entirely on your device

The PDF is loaded, stamped, and saved in your browser, free of uploads, accounts, and watermarks.

About this tool

This tool stamps page numbers onto an existing PDF directly in your browser. It takes one file, draws a number on each page, and re-saves the document locally. Every change to position, format, start number, size, or colour re-stamps the file straight away, so the download always matches the current settings.

Numbers can sit in any of six spots (top or bottom, aligned left, centre, or right) and follow a plain 1, Page 1, or 1 of 12, or your own text such as Page {n} of {p} or Draft {n}, where {n} is the page number and {p} is the total. The start number accepts any value, which matters when a chapter continues from a previous file. When the first page is a title or cover, skip it so numbering begins on page two, and pick a size and a colour (black, grey, or white) that reads on the page. Course readers, board packs, and printed manuscripts are the usual customers: anything that gets printed, shuffled, and reassembled needs numbers on the paper itself.

The file never leaves your machine while any of this happens. If the document is still in pieces, merge PDF will assemble it first, and delete PDF pages can drop drafts or blanks before you number the result. A folder of scans becomes a numberable document with images to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?
Drop a PDF onto the tool and page numbers are stamped at the bottom centre right away. Change the position, the starting number, the format, or the look, and the numbered PDF updates instantly, ready to download.
Where can the page numbers go?
You can place them in any of six spots: the top or bottom of the page, on the left, centre, or right. The default is bottom centre, which suits most documents.
Can I use my own text, like Page 1 of 12?
Yes. Pick the Custom format and type any text with {n} for the page number and {p} for the total. Page {n} of {p} prints as Page 1 of 12, and Draft {n} prints as Draft 1.
Can I leave the cover page unnumbered?
Yes. Choose Skip the cover and the first page is left blank while numbering begins on page two, which takes the start number. This keeps a title or cover page clean.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set any start number and the first numbered page takes that value, counting up from there. This is handy when a document continues from another file.
Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No. Page numbers are drawn locally in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.
