Why use this tool

Handles night shifts

A finish time earlier than the start is read as a shift running past midnight rather than rejected, so overnight work adds up correctly.

Payroll style rounding

Rounds each shift to the nearest 5 or 15 minutes before totalling, which is how rounding rules are written. Rounding the weekly total instead would give a different answer.

Two overtime rules

Split regular and overtime hours either over 40 in a week or over 8 in a day, covering the two most common arrangements.

Hours and decimal hours

Shows the week in hours and minutes and as a decimal, because payroll systems ask for 7.75 rather than 7:45.

Nothing leaves your browser

Shifts, rates, and pay are calculated locally and never uploaded, so your wage information stays private.

About this tool

A time card calculator turns clock in and clock out times into the number that actually matters: how many hours you worked this week. Fill in each day, subtract the unpaid break, and the totals build as you type. Hours appear both as hours and minutes and as a decimal, because payroll systems almost always want the decimal form and converting 7 hours 45 minutes into 7.75 by hand is where mistakes creep in.

Shifts that run past midnight are handled properly. A finish time earlier than the start is treated as crossing into the next day rather than as a typo, so a shift from 22:00 to 06:00 counts as eight hours and is marked as spilling over. Rounding, where your employer uses it, is applied to each shift before anything is added up, which is how rounding rules are normally written and is not the same as rounding the weekly total at the end.

Overtime can be split at 40 hours in a week or at 8 hours in a day, the two arrangements most schedules use, and gross pay applies time and a half to the overtime portion. Pay shown here is before tax and before any deductions, so treat it as a check against your payslip rather than a replacement for it. For converting a rate rather than counting hours, see hourly to salary and salary to hourly. For a single span rather than a week, the duration calculator is quicker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a shift that runs past midnight?
Enter the times as they are. A finish time earlier than the start is automatically read as the next day, and the row is marked so you can see it was counted that way.
Does it subtract breaks?
Yes. The break column is unpaid minutes and is taken off that day before the hours are totalled. Leave it blank for a shift with no unpaid break.
How is overtime calculated?
You choose the rule: over 40 hours in the week or over 8 hours in a day. Gross pay applies time and a half to the overtime hours.
Is the pay figure what I take home?
No. It is gross pay before tax, national insurance, pension, and any other deductions, so it will be higher than your net pay.
Are my hours and pay rate uploaded?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser, so your shifts and your rate never leave your device.
