How to make your screen a white light

  1. Set the brightness

    Drag the brightness slider to pick how strong the panel should be, from a soft glow up to the maximum the display can produce.

  2. Pick a colour temperature

    Slide from warm candlelight toward cool daylight until the light matches the room you are sitting in.

  3. Go fullscreen

    Press Go fullscreen to fill the whole display, then turn up your system brightness for the strongest result.

  4. Exit when you are done

    Press Esc or tap the close button in the corner to return to the page.

About this tool

A white screen is the quickest light source you already own. Fill a phone or laptop display with white and you have a soft, even panel for a video call, a way to find something behind a desk, or a clean backdrop for checking a screen protector for dust.

The usual limit is that plain white is as bright as a web page can go. Displays that support a high dynamic range can push certain content well past that point, and this tool uses that headroom: on a recent iPhone, iPad, or an HDR-capable Mac display, the panel is visibly stronger than a plain white page. Low power mode on iOS disables the effect, and standard-range displays fall back to ordinary white with no error.

Two controls shape the light. Brightness dims the panel from the page without you touching system settings, which is useful when the maximum is too harsh for a dark room. Colour temperature runs from 2,200 K candlelight to 9,000 K daylight, so you can match the bulbs around you instead of washing everything in blue. Both apply live and carry into fullscreen, where they fade out of the way after a couple of seconds and come back on a tap.

For a full screen of colours rather than white, the dead pixel test cycles solid fields to expose stuck pixels, and the HDR display test shows whether the screen you are on can actually reach beyond plain white.

Frequently asked questions

How is this brighter than a plain white page?
Displays with a high dynamic range reserve headroom above ordinary white for content that asks for it. The panel serves a tiny clip that asks for that headroom, so the white it produces is brighter than the white a normal page can reach. On a standard display the same clip shows as ordinary white.
Why does my screen not look any brighter?
Either the display does not support a high dynamic range, or something is limiting it. Low power mode on an iPhone or iPad turns the effect off, as does a very low system brightness. The line under the panel tells you which range your display is currently reporting.
Can I use this as a light for video calls?
Yes. Set a warm to neutral colour temperature, go fullscreen on a second screen or a phone, and position it slightly above eye level. The screen is asked to stay awake while the panel is open so it will not dim mid-call.
How do I exit fullscreen?
Press Esc, or tap the close button in the top corner. The controls fade out while you are idle and reappear as soon as you move the pointer or tap the screen.
Will this damage my screen?
No. It shows the same kind of bright image any photo or video can produce. As with any display, leaving a static image on screen at maximum brightness for many hours is not ideal, so close the panel when you are finished.
Is anything uploaded?
No. There is no input to send. The page runs entirely in your browser with no account and no tracking of what you do with it.
