How to make a barcode online

  1. Pick a symbology

    Choose Code 128 for free-form text and part numbers, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, Code 39 for asset tags, or ITF for shipping cartons.

  2. Type the value

    Enter the code you want to encode. The bars are drawn live as you type, and anything the chosen symbology cannot accept is flagged with the reason instead of producing an unreadable code.

  3. Set the bar size

    Adjust the bar width and height, and switch the human-readable line under the bars on or off.

  4. Download

About this tool

This barcode generator draws linear (1D) barcodes from a value you type. Pick one of five symbologies and the bars redraw on every keystroke: Code 128 for free-form text, digits, and part numbers of any length; EAN-13 and UPC-A for retail products; Code 39 for asset tags and older industrial systems; and ITF for the outer cartons that ship those products. The bar width and bar height are adjustable, and the human-readable line under the bars can be turned off when the label has no room for it.

Getting the check digit right is where most homemade barcodes fail, so the tool takes it on. Give it 12 digits for EAN-13 or 11 for UPC-A and the final digit is calculated and added. Give it the complete number and the check digit is verified, with a message naming the digit it should have been. Code 128 always carries its own checksum, Code 39 can optionally carry a check character, and ITF is held to an even digit count because it encodes digits in pairs. Values a symbology cannot represent are refused with a reason instead of quietly producing bars that no scanner will decode.

Both downloads come from the same drawing, so what you see is what you get. SVG is the better choice for anything that will be printed, since the bar edges stay perfectly sharp at any size, and it can be placed straight into a label template. PNG is rendered at four times the preview size for slides and documents. Leave the light margin on each side of the code intact when you place it, because scanners need that quiet space to find the first bar. Frequently asked questions

Which barcode types can I generate?
Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 39 and ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5). Code 128 takes any printable text and is the best default for internal codes; EAN-13 and UPC-A are the retail product codes; Code 39 covers A to Z, 0 to 9, space and a handful of symbols; ITF encodes digits in pairs and is common on shipping cartons.
Do I need to work out the check digit myself?
No. For EAN-13 enter 12 digits and for UPC-A enter 11, and the check digit is calculated and appended. If you paste the complete number instead, the check digit is verified and a mismatch is reported with the digit it should have been.
Why is my value rejected?
Each symbology has its own rules. EAN-13 and UPC-A take a fixed number of digits, ITF needs an even count because it encodes digits two at a time, and Code 39 supports only A to Z, 0 to 9, space and - . $ / + %. The tool names the exact problem rather than drawing a barcode that cannot be scanned.
Can it make QR codes?
No. This tool draws linear (1D) barcodes only. QR codes are 2D and are covered by the QR code generator, which also builds WiFi, contact card, and map-location codes.
Should I download SVG or PNG?
Choose SVG for anything printed: it is a vector, so the bar edges stay sharp at any size and it drops straight into a label template. Choose PNG for slides, documents, and quick sharing; it is rendered at four times the preview size so it still prints cleanly.
Will these barcodes actually scan?
Yes, provided you print them large enough and keep the light margin on both sides. Scanners need that quiet space to locate the code, and very narrow bars can blur on low-resolution printers, so raise the bar width if a code proves hard to read.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The barcode is drawn entirely on your device. Whatever you encode never leaves your browser, is not sent to a server, and is not stored or logged.
