How to calculate volume
Choose a shape
Select a cube, box, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid, or capsule from the shape list.
Enter the dimensions
Type each required measurement as a positive number and pick the unit you are working in.
Read the results
The volume, surface area, and conversions to liters and gallons are computed instantly.
Copy the summary
Use the copy button to put the shape, dimensions, and every result on your clipboard.
Why use this tool
Seven common solids
Cube, box, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid, and capsule are each solved with their standard formula.
Volume and surface area
Every shape returns both its volume and its total surface area, including the curved and flat faces.
Liters and gallons
Alongside the raw volume, the result is converted to liters, US and imperial gallons, milliliters, cubic meters, and cubic feet.
Any length unit
Work in millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches, feet, or yards, and the volume comes back in that unit cubed.
Guards bad input
Empty fields, zero, and negative dimensions are caught with a clear message instead of a broken result.
Runs entirely in your browser
Every calculation happens on your device. Nothing you type is uploaded.
About this tool
Volume is the amount of space a solid occupies, and each shape has its own formula for working it out from a handful of measurements. This calculator covers seven of the most common solids: the cube, rectangular box, sphere, cylinder, cone, rectangular pyramid, and capsule. Choose the shape you are measuring, type in its dimensions, and it applies the correct formula to return the volume, along with the total surface area of every face.
You can work in whatever unit suits the job, from millimeters up to yards. The volume comes back in that unit cubed and the surface area in that unit squared, and the same figure is converted into liters, US and imperial gallons, milliliters, cubic meters, and cubic feet so you can read it however you need. That makes it handy for everything from filling a fish tank or a planter to sizing a shipping box or a batch of concrete.
Results update the moment you finish typing, with no button to press. Dimensions must be positive, so empty, zero, or negative values are flagged with a short message rather than a wrong answer. For flat two dimensional shapes try the circle calculator or the triangle calculator, and to move a single measurement between systems use the unit converter.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate the volume of a cylinder?
- Select Cylinder, then enter the radius and height. The volume is pi times the radius squared times the height, and the surface area of the side and both circular caps is shown next to it.
- What shapes are supported?
- Seven solids: a cube, a rectangular box, a sphere, a cylinder, a cone, a right rectangular pyramid, and a capsule. Each uses its standard volume and surface area formula.
- How is the capsule measured?
- A capsule is a cylinder with a hemisphere on each end. Enter the radius and the length of the straight cylindrical section, and the two rounded caps are added in automatically.
- Can I convert the result to liters or gallons?
- Yes. Every volume is converted to liters, US gallons, and imperial gallons automatically, along with milliliters, cubic meters, and cubic feet, whatever length unit you start from.
- What happens with empty, zero, or negative dimensions?
- A solid needs positive dimensions, so any empty, zero, or negative measurement is rejected with a short message instead of a wrong or blank result.
- Is my data uploaded anywhere?
- No. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
