Video Face Blur

To blur faces in a video, each face has to be covered on every frame, not just found once. Here faces are searched for six times a second, joined into one track per person, and the cover is carried through every frame in between.

How to blur faces in a video

  1. Add your video

Drop an MP4, MOV, or WebM clip up to 5 minutes long. Faces are found and followed through the whole clip straight away.

  2. Check the preview

Play the preview with every face covered. Untick anyone in the face list who should stay visible, and pause to drag a box over anything that was missed.

  3. Pick a style and blur

Blur is the default; solid black and large pixel blocks are the other choices. Press Blur video to save every frame with the covers burned in.

  4. Download

Save the result as an MP4 with the original sound. The file keeps its name with -blurred added.

Why use this tool

Faces followed through the clip

Faces are searched for six times a second and joined into one track per person. Where a face moves fast, as in a quick pan or zoom, every frame is checked instead, so the cover stays on the face.

Untick anyone who should stay visible

Every person found gets a row with a thumbnail and the time they are on screen. Untick yourself, or anyone who agreed to be filmed, and the preview updates at once.

A blur that cannot be undone

Each face is reduced to a handful of colour cells before it is smoothed, on every frame, so the features are gone from the saved file rather than softened.

Cover what it missed

Pause the preview and drag over a missed face, a name badge, or a screen. A drawn box covers that spot for the whole clip, or only between the moments you choose.

Original sound, standard MP4

The result is an H.264 MP4 at the original size, up to 4K, that plays on phones, computers, and social apps. AAC sound is copied across unchanged.

Nothing leaves your browser

The video is read, checked, and blurred on your device. It is never uploaded, and the saved file carries no location or camera details from the original.

About this tool

Filming in public, at a school event, or at work usually catches people who never agreed to be in the video. Blurring them by hand in an editor means drawing a mask and moving it frame by frame. This tool does that part: it finds the faces, follows each person through the clip, and shows the result on a live preview before anything is saved.

Faces are searched for six times a second, and the cover is carried through every frame in between. It starts a moment before a face is first seen and stays a moment after it is last seen, so someone walking into the shot is covered from the first frame. Detection is good but not perfect: faces turned fully away or in profile, very small faces far from the camera, faces cut off by the edge of the picture, and faces blurred by fast movement can be missed, and a hand or a pattern is sometimes covered by mistake. Watch the preview before saving and drag a box over anything missed.

Clips can be up to 5 minutes long. On a recent laptop the whole job takes about one and a half to two times the length of the clip; phones and older computers are slower. To shorten a clip first, use Trim Video. To blur faces in photos instead, use Face Blur, and to drop the sound from a clip, use Mute Video.

Frequently asked questions

How does it find faces in a video?
Six frames out of every second are searched for faces at several sizes, and faces in neighbouring frames are joined into one track per person by where they are and how they move. Wherever a face moved a long way between two searches, every frame in that stretch is searched as well. The cover then follows each track through every frame.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The video is read, checked, and blurred in your browser and never sent to a server. The face finder, about 15 MB, downloads the first time and stays saved in your browser. WebM files and some other formats also need a video engine of about 32 MB the first time.
Will it find every face?
Not always, so watch the preview before you save. Faces turned away or in profile, very small, cut off by the edge of the picture, or blurred by fast movement can be missed. Pause and drag a box over anything it missed; a box covers that spot for the whole clip unless you limit it.
Can I keep my own face visible?
Yes. Every person found has a row in the face list with a thumbnail. Untick your row and your face stays visible in the preview and in the saved video, while everyone else stays blurred. If the camera moved fast, the same person can appear in more than one row, so untick each of them.
Which videos can I use, and how long?
MP4, MOV, and WebM clips up to 5 minutes long. Longer clips are turned away before any work starts; trim them first. The result is always an MP4 with H.264 video at the original size, up to 4K, and the original sound.
How long does it take?
On a recent laptop, finding faces takes about one and a half times the length of the clip and saving takes seconds, so a one minute 1080p clip is ready in about two minutes. Phones are slower, and browsers without fast video support use a slower method that saves at up to 1280 px wide and takes several times the clip length.
