How to make an image background transparent

About this tool

This tool removes a single background color from an image and gives you back a transparent PNG. It works by keying: every pixel close enough to the color you choose becomes see-through, while everything else stays. When you drop an image, the top-left corner color is picked automatically, since that corner is almost always background. From there you can click anywhere on the preview to sample a different color or type an exact hex value.

Two sliders control the result. Tolerance sets how close a pixel has to be to the target color before it is removed, so a low value knocks out only the exact shade while a high value catches a whole range of similar tones. Edge feather softens the boundary with a gradual fade, which helps hide the fringe that hard keying can leave around hair or curved edges. The preview sits on a checkerboard so transparent areas are obvious at a glance.

This is a simple color keyer, best for flat, even backgrounds like a solid studio backdrop, a logo on white, or a screenshot. It is not a subject cut-out that traces a person or product away from a busy scene. For clean results, start with an image that has a consistent background. Once you have the PNG, you can shrink it with the image compressor, reshape it with the image cropper, or turn a photo into a round avatar with circle crop.

Frequently asked questions

How does the background removal work?
It compares every pixel to the color you choose and makes the close ones transparent. This is color keying, which is why it works best on flat, even backgrounds rather than busy scenes.
Why are there rough edges around my subject?
Hard keying can leave a thin fringe. Raise the edge feather slider to fade the boundary, and adjust the tolerance so it catches the background without eating into the subject.
What image formats can I use?
You can drop JPEG, PNG, or WebP images. The result is always a PNG so it can carry real transparency.
Is this the same as an automatic subject remover?
No. This removes one chosen color, so it shines on solid backdrops and logos. For a photo with a complicated background, an automatic subject cut-out is a better fit.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser and the image never leaves your device. Very large images are scaled down to stay within browser limits, and the tool tells you when that happens.
