About this tool
Scientific notation writes a number as a single digit followed by a decimal fraction, multiplied by a power of ten, which makes very large or very small values easier to read and compare. This tool goes both ways: type a plain decimal and it produces the scientific form, or type a value already in scientific or e notation and it expands back into a plain decimal, since the input form is detected automatically rather than requiring a direction to be chosen first.
Alongside scientific notation, the tool also shows E notation, the compact form used by calculators and programming languages, and engineering notation, which restricts the exponent to a multiple of three so it lines up naturally with metric prefixes like kilo, mega, and giga. All four forms, including the plain decimal, are derived from the same parsed value, so they always agree with each other.
By default every significant digit from the typed input is preserved, so nothing is rounded that was not already rounded by the person typing it. Switching the significant figures setting rounds all four forms consistently to that many digits.
