408Request Timeout

The server gave up waiting for the request to arrive, so it closed the idle connection.

When you see it

A slow or interrupted upload, a client that opened a connection and did not send anything, or a network that stalled mid-request. Note that this is the request being too slow, not the server being too slow to answer, which is 504.

Some servers send 408 routinely to close pre-opened idle connections. Seeing occasional 408s in logs with no user complaints is usually normal housekeeping rather than a fault.

408 means your request was too slow to arrive. 504 means the request arrived fine and something behind the server was too slow to answer it.
